Hello tumbl world, I’ve been away a long time. That is because I was busy getting serious about my job search and simultaneously applying for a New York teaching fellowship. I also was mid-getting processed to be a substitute teacher. So, my days largely consisted of the following:
- For my job search, I started keeping an excel spreadsheet. For each job I applied to, I recorded the company, who I applied to, the date I applied, any Smith alumna who worked for that company (and who I would subsequently write to) and the name of the company’s parent company if there was one. Five days after the date I applied, I would follow up. And if I got an interview, I would record the date of that too.
- For my substitute teacher application, after I got a nomination from a local principle, I went about taking an online course, substitute teaching 101. I also started studying for the LAST, which I took and was signed up for a course on child abuse and school violence.
- For my fellowship application, I had three essays to write, all basically about what I have to bring to a low income school community. I also started clocking hours as the teacher of a video production after school program at Laquardia High School.
Lo and behold, last week I was offered a job (4 days after my 23rd birthday) at an IT and technical staffing company we will call JobsTown. The ad for the job was on LinkedIn and I followed up twice, sat through three interviews and had to give one mock sales pitch. I am now an Assistant Recruiter, although I prefer the term Head Hunter.
The job doesn’t start until Jan 3rd, so until then I’ve returned to CT for some relaxing and free food
